Year In Review

As yet another year comes to a close, we can’t help but reflect on the past almost 12 months all that we’ve accomplished here at MiG.

For starters, we’ve grown. A company is only successful as the people behind it, and we’re incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to expand our staff while continuing to bring you the same innovative construction solutions that we’ve been delivering for the past 30 years and counting.

Not only have we grown staff-wise, but we’ve also expanded our business. This year we officially opened up an office in Atlanta, known as MiG South, to bring our wide range of services and experience in a broad range of markets to a different region. We’re excited to continue on with this journey into the New Year as well.

For us, 2016 was filled with a number of successful construction projects, including, but not limited to:

MiG Construction’s culture is rooted in providing individuals with opportunities to expand their abilities through training, promotions and hands-on experience at every point of a project cycle. Our strong and stable foundation was laid forth over 40 years ago, and we work hard to keep it intact by hiring those who are eager to learn the business.

We believe in operating with a young, fresh approach to the construction business. It’s our philosophy that taking care of employees is the key component in achieving long-term success as a team.

We recruit individuals who share our same passion, and we look forward to giving them the tools they need to succeed. While construction experience and education are important and valued, we will work with candidates who are the right fit to increase their skillset in order to apply that knowledge in ways they never thought possible.

The types of projects we undertake are diverse, whether they pertain to the automotive, aviation, education, gaming, government, health care, hospitality, industrial, retail or energy industries. For that reason, we choose to build our team with self-confident and collaborative individuals who welcome responsibility and hard work to achieve personal and group goals.

Detroit-based MiG Construction and Atlanta-based MiG South are hiring project engineers, project managers and, for those in senior-level positions, field supervisors. As we begin to reflect on 2016, the construction industry as a whole experienced a booming year of business. The year brought high demand for new projects and continued growth in an economy that is still rebounding. There was growth in many sectors, most notably retail construction. This area has expanded as retailers seek innovative exterior and interior building designs to attract new customers and retain current ones.

At the beginning of 2016, a report issued by JLL, a financial and professional services firm specializing in commercial real estate services and investment management, indicated retail construction projects were up almost 25% year-over-year. Much of the first quarter growth came from renovation rather than “new deliveries.” In meeting consumer expectations, retailers are developing renovation programs that unify an online brand experience with a brick and mortar store. As retail vacancies continue to decline, development opportunities rise.

One of MiG’s noteworthy retail construction projects in 2016 was the construction of the House of Pure Vin, located on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. An impressive 3,100-square-foot wine shop, the venue showcases towering racks of wine selections. Customers can also experience wine tastings, meal pairings and bottles to go. This new and modern project was completed in March 2016 and contributed largely to bringing life and business to the city of Detroit.

The JLL report goes on to note that the construction industry was expected to remain strong this year due to lagging the broader economy by one to two years. In light of this, projections indicate a plateau wouldn’t occur until at least 2017, which is a very promising sign for our business.

A lot of hard work and effort goes into ensuring that each one of our construction projects is completed to the best of our abilities. That’s how it should be, and we don’t stop there.

Sustainable construction and development is a very important aspect of our business, making certain that projects are completed without depleting natural resources or having harmful environmental impacts. That is why we are proud to have a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification on a number of our finished projects.

The LEED program is administered by the Green Building Certification Institute and was established with the support of the U.S. Green Building Council to encourage those involved in the various aspects of the construction industry to join the movement of global leaders producing innovative buildings. Projects pursuing LEED certification use less water and energy, and they reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In completing these projects as such, they are resource efficient as well as save money.

Our president, Brian Deming, pursued Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design professional accreditation (LEED AP) in 2009. LEED APs demonstrate a thorough understanding of green building techniques, the LEED Green Building Rating System, and the certification process for new and used construction projects. Brian has helped our team understand and apply this knowledge in project development.

One of our LEED-certified projects is the Julian Serrano restaurant, located in the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Construction of this 220-seat bar was made to be sustainable in the city that never sleeps, while still fully encapsulating Chef Serrano’s vision.

In practicing sustainable development, we exercise responsibility in building for the present while helping ensure that future generations will still have resources to work with. That’s a legacy we’re proud to leave.

MiG Construction, an integrated construction solutions firm, recently oversaw the addition of a new and modern wine store on Woodward Avenue. Centrally located to many downtown attractions, including Ford Field and the Fox Theatre, the House of Pure Vin is a signature retail wine shop that is the ideal destination for connoisseurs and casual fans alike. From start to finish, Detroit-based MiG constructed the 3,100-square-foot space which includes a champagne room and towering racks of various selections, and offers wine tastings, perfect meal pairings, and bottles-to-go.

“We’re thrilled to have been involved with this project,” said MiG’s Vice President, Brian Deming. “It’ll be a great part of the revitalization of Detroit’s downtown.”

This isn’t the fist time MiG Construction has played a hand in bringing life and business back to the city. Aside from the House of Pure Vin, MiG has been an indispensable part of renovating many Detroit area schools and hospitals, as well as the main cog behind MotorCity Casino and Hotel’s massive $300 million renovation project.

House of Pure Vin is located at 1433 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48226.
